MYTH: YOU HAVE HEREDITARY HAIR LOSS AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO
Genetics is obviously a major factor in how you might lose hair or go grey and even whether it is curly or straight etc. Having any hereditary condition, such as Androgenic Alopecia doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do, it’s just the likelihood of your genes. Most hair problems are considered genetic, yet this does not mean you will have to suffer in the same way as your predecessors. Hair thinning and hair loss amongst men and now particularly women is increasing and the understanding behind it is too. It is possible to discover and then rectify in some way, what is going on that makes you (and your ancestors) lose hair in the way you do, and they once did.
HARDER TO TREAT:
Areas that have become completely bald are much harder to get growing again, since the hair follicle has mostly given up. Alopecia Totalis or complete baldness is something completely different to the gradual decline of hair growth and many factors will affect how successfully this can be treated. There is a fair bit of research going on right now into all types of hair loss, so I am not going to give up hope and will be investigating this further – watch this space.
THINNING HAIR
So if you find that your hair seems to be fading away as it did for your parents, or even grandparent, don't just brush this off as your fate, there are things you can do about it although these things may take some effort on your part. Having done a lot of research and pulled my hair back from the brink of thinning, I still have the same hair as my parents, but actually more of it! I wrote the eBook (free on this website) in order to go through all the reasons why thinning hair and hair loss is not a foregone conclusion but here are the five key points which are essential to getting hair to return to its former glory.
1. Digestion. Any food intolerances or not so great digestion are big indicators of how you might assimilate your food and the nutrients in them. The nutrients in a super healthy diet won't get past a bad gut situation. If your digestion is a bit grumpy, this is the first and main point where healthy hair growth can go wrong and it is worth fixing or working towards a better digestion whatever that means to you.
2. Diet. Two key factors in the diet contribute to the higher levels of of DHT, a derivative of testosterone which is present in high amounts in most people with thinning hair or hair loss. It is the cause of the shrinking of the hair follicle in androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness (and now female). These two factors are: #1 Good bacteria. DHT thrives in an environment where there isn't much good bacteria, which would enable it to be processed by the body. Pre and Pro Biotics are essential to keep the gut healthy in these modern times and are key to keeping DHT in its place. #2 Alkalinity. It is said that cancer cells cannot survive in an alkaline environment and I would add that DHT can't either. Upping your intake of greens and at least trying to cut back on sugar and processed food will go a long way in keeping DHT at bay.
3. Massage. If there isn't much blood flow to the head, there won't be much nutrients at the hair follicle, so giving your head any kind of massage is going to increase the chances of your hair getting some good food and I can't under estimate this. Massage in the shower with wet hair, massage a scalp treatment in when your hair is dry, massage when you are sitting at the lights in your car. Just do it in whatever way you like and watch how is reduces hair shedding and keeping your hair on your head for longer.
4. Nutrition. Of course I would say this, but I will add that some people are just lacking some protein and taking some Biotin or Fish Oils will correct their hair (and nail) weakness. For most people with real hair thinning, there is a whole lot more going on and the reason why I developed the Good Hair Nutrient Complex in order to not just provide hair with the nutrients it needs, but also to stop DHT in its tracks and to keep hair in the anogen 'growing' phase. Personally I need this more complex approach since I had all of the predetermined issues for thinning hair; by taking these nutrients, I reduced them considerably.
5. Try not to use shampoos, conditioners and other hair products that contain silicone. For me this was smothering my hair and making it greasier and thinner and switching to non-silicone products was night and day; for the first time in a very long time I didn't have to wash my hair every day. Silicone is used in most commercial hair products and it literally smothers the hair making it feel thick and glossy. Thick and curly hair LOVES this type of support but fine hair just gets drowned. I have used expensive brands for a long time but I see that L'Oreal have just introduced a new non-silicone range, so things are looking up. http://www.botanicalsfreshcare.com/
